Meet Cathie, Another of the Flea.o.logy Three. . .

Hi, I'm Cathie and I've been in the second-hand "business" for about six years now but have loved second-hand nearly all my life - starting with a garage sale purchase in my early teens (see my blog, address at the side!).  I call my little business "sEcoNd haNd sTuFt - from my stuft house. . . to yours" ~ since my house is always literally stuffed with goodies I have in waiting to sell.  And I mean stuffed --- the basement, the garage, the patio, and usually the living room, the kitchen, the sewing room, our bedroom and the kitchen table.  What that means for us is that we live in constant chaos - but for you it means that we constantly have fun things to bring to the antique mall and to the flea market for you to buy!

 

Things I love. . . ooh, there are so many things I love!  My favorite are things from the 50's.  Retro anything.  Clothes, linens, kitchen, kitsch, etc. etc.  Love those colors!  I love enamel.  And metal.  And fabric.  And primitives.  And chippy paint.  Stools, buckets, light covers, salvage, aprons, towels, board games, books, wheelbarrows, wood chairs, floral hankies, vintage toys, old windows, old doors (I'm in SO much trouble with my sweet husband if I bring home any more old doors), metal patio chairs (ditto), buttons, kitchen utensils. . . . . . . . and the list goes on.  I just love SO many old things!!

I got my feet wet selling second-hand on eBay and online locally.  Then one day I found a lovely silver plate mirror at a yard sale and zipped it over to my dear friend's consignment shop, where she sold it within a few weeks for 10 times what I paid for it.  I was hooked!  She connected me with a local monthly flea market where I could sell some things.  I got a job at a Salt Lake consignment shop.  I was quite successful at the shop and started branching out to more flea markets and street fairs.  All of a sudden antique selling became a business instead of just a hobby.  I now could add a new "career" to my lifetime list. . . antique dealer!

I now sell at Treasures Antique Mall in Springville (I-15 West Frontage Road, exit 261) and consign at Now & Again in Salt Lake (501 E. 300 South) and at Aunt Elsie's in Gardner Village in West Jordan.  You'll also find me at, of course, flea.o.logy, and at the Acorn Antique Show in Ogden May 21st & 22nd, Bella's Vintage Market on July 9th and at the Avenues Street Fair on September 10th.

Meet Paula, One of the Flea.o.logy Three!

Hi, my name is Paula and I live in Payson in an unusual historic home which was built in the late 1800's.  The thing that makes the house unusual is that it was built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which was normally reserved for commercial and school buildings. (It is also the house where the flea.o.logy sales are held.) 

 I have been smitten by antiques in general since visiting my friend Debbie's grandmother's historic and restored home in Hoytsville when I was 9 years old.

My husband Scott and I bought our Payson home after I saw it while junquing with a fellow antique dealer at an Estate Sale held at the house.  My antiquing partner Trish was married to a real estate agent, so it's not to hard to see how I ended up finding the house of my dreams at an estate sale in 1997.

At some point I will post a picture tour of my house, but for today I am going to focus on my life as an antique dealer.   I moved into my first antique mall in 1995 along with Trish.  We shared a booth at Flamingo Road for several years.

Since then I have been in 8 different antique malls, have participated in several flea markets, and have done antique shows with three different companies.  I am currently working at Treasures Antiques in Springville, and showing at the Walter Larsen Show in Salt Lake, and the Acorn Show in Ogden.

I have also been active in drafting other like minded individuals and doing flea markets at my home in Payson since 2005.

I am including a sampling of items in which I specialize.  These pictures were taken at the beginning of the Acorn Antique Show in Ogden that was just held in February.

This picture shows my bent towards Victorian Antiques, my first love.

In this picture you see another weakness of mine.  That is for children's toys, books and dolls.

I also like items with a French flair, as indicated by the French Boudoir doll, the Paris Fashion prints, busts, candlesticks and the wonderful purse.

This is a close up of the Easter display I put together at the show.  I have always loved antique, vintage and even good reproductions of holiday items.  I go a little crazy at my house at Christmas time, I won't deny it.

This is a picture of the store where I currently work two days a week.  If you haven't been to Treasures Antiques, on the I-15 West Frontage road between the two Springville Exits, you are truly missing something.  We have 22,000 square feet and 65 dealers between our two stores, for some of the very best antique shopping in Utah!

And of course this is me, snuggled in with two of the ten most precious Treasures that adorn my life, Grandchildren.  (Meet Scott and Eva!)

The Divas of Design or Queens of Kitsch

The flea market on Main Street in Payson has developed quite a following, as has been mentioned.  New vendors have signed on to try their hand.  Friendships have been formed and personal style has been influenced by the relationships among the sellers at this Flea Market.

We have seen vendors come and go.  Some leaving the retail end of antiquing, while others have gotten their start with us.  We have long time antique dealers who are seeking new venues, and extremely part time enthusiasts.

Jennifer and Cathie both joined us in doing the Flea Market last summer, in 2010.  They have great stuff, sharing vintage items along with some wonderful crafts thrown into the mix.  It was Jennifer who suggested that we might 'ramp up' our market,  including more variety, crafted items and providing delicious treats for those who are so inclined, and honestly who is not? 

Thus, during our vendor hibernation this winter 'flea.o.logy' was born. We will continue to maintain an area for those who like to 'discover' their treasures in the 'raw', while adding an area that includes repaired, painted, collected and crafted item.  We want our flea.o.logy market to continue to excite our many loyal customers, as well as have it grow to include new friends and lovers of all that is wonderful and vintage.  In short there will be something for everyone!!

The Flea Market on Main in Payson or Fleo.o.logy - The Early Years

Before we start this discussion it is important for you to know one thing.  Though there are great flea markets all over Europe and the United States, and probably even in Timbuktu, there are NO real flea markets in Utah.

This is a lack that has been deeply felt by many antique dealers and antique lovers of every shape and size here in Utah.  Local antique aficionados have traveled far and wide to attend the wonderful flea markets that we read about (and drool over)  in antiquing magazines.  These include Brimfield, Round Top, all the Renningers sales and even the Rose Bowl Flea Market. 

In the summer of 2005, I gathered several friends and associates in the antiques business, including dealers, customers and even one amazing picker.  I invited them to join forces and start a flea market in the fenced yard of my historic home on Main Street in Payson, Utah.

The people of Payson were suffering from a lack of antique stores, having just one occasionally open and another by appointment only shop, they were hungry for antiques and they flocked to our first sale that summer.

By the end of the summer 2005 we had five regular vendors and were drawing hundreds of customers to every sale.

The flea market was a great place for me to clearance wares that had set too long on the shelves of my booths at Treasures Antiques and other Antique Malls where I rented space.  Other dealers did the same.  I even invited good customers to come and clear out their own antique treasures as they changed decor directions or found a move eminent. 

Last Summer, our 6th year of holding sales, we had as many as 12 vendors.  People would stop me in the grocery store and ask if we were still  doing the sales.  Customers at the shop would start asking when we would start our sales as early as January.   So that now, it never feels like spring to me unless I have my first sale date set. 

This is my historic house in Payson, Utah.  It was built in 1894, by John Dixon who later served two terms as Mayor of Payson.  He lived here with his wife, whose nickname was Daisy, and his only child, a daughter Jennie.

The yard of this house is the perfect place for a flea market as it is surrounded by enormous trees that keep the yard shaded all day.  Even when temperatures are in the 80's and 90's one is comfortable and cool!  Hopefully you will be able to come and visit us at one of our sales this year.  We are adding some new features and hope to have something for everyone.
